DENVER — Call it a New England hangover. Or a trap game. Either way, the Jets’ 17-13 loss to the Denver Broncos tonight was one thing: A humbling defeat in the AFC that further clouded their playoff picture.
And Tim Tebow, running that option-style offense Darrelle Revis said can’t succeed in the NFL long term, did it again.
"He did it. Tim Tebow did it," Revis said. "He shocked me, he probably shocked a lot of people, but he did it."
With a 12-play, 95-yard drive, the Broncos pulled off the victory after looking stagnant on offense for nearly the entire night. It was Tebow who crossed the goal line on a 20-yard run with 58 seconds left in the game, evading safety Eric Smith at the 3-yard line.
It was a third-down play, and the Jets called an all-out pressure with no safeties deep.
The Jets delivered no two-minute rally and, this year, it was the Broncos’ turn for a seemingly unlikely comeback. The Jets and Broncos now share the same record, 5-5, and the wild-card berth the Jets were counting on after last week’s tough loss to the Patriots has become more challenging.
"We’re not perfect by any stretch, but we’re a lot better than this," said coach Rex Ryan, appearing to fight back tears. "We all know it. Every man in that locker room knows it."
The Jets had woes all night: special-teams miscues, the loss of their starting running back to a rib injury and quarterback Mark Sanchez’s second pick-6 in two weeks. But their defense did a solid job containing Denver’s college-style offense — until their opponent’s final drive.
The Jets held a 13-10 lead going into that drive, holding onto the margin earned by a 45-yard field goal with 9:14 to play.
The only touchdowns before Tebow’s winning score had been a 1-yard fumble recovery by Jets left guard Matt Slauson — yes, you read that right — and Broncos cornerback Andre Goodman’s 26-yard interception return on a pass intended for Plaxico Burress.
Sanchez did not have quite the bounce-back game he had hoped and gave his team a scare when he took a helmet to the back by linebacker Von Miller late in the third quarter, and came up shaking his throwing hand. He said after the game he felt fine. Sanchez finished 24 of 40 for 252 yards and the one INT.
Tebow was 9-of-20 for 104 yards passing and had eight carries for 68 yards rushing)
I watched the game and I knew Jets were done from the kickoff, Any thoughts? | |
